Four pillars of social networking

I often get asked by friends, colleagues and acquaintances about why x, y, or z social networking tool is useful. (The question is alternatively phrased to ask me to justify why social networking is not just a waste of time.) I think many people of a certain age (even Generation X) find it very difficult [...]

Germany runs out of solar panels

CleanTechnica reports that, due to its gross feed-in tariff, Germany has run out of solar panels. A burst of new business at the end of 2009 put Germany close to adding a record of solar power to the grid, according to the head of Germany’s BSW solar industry association, Carsten Koernig. He estimates that in [...]

The Cameronisation of Turnbull

Recently, Turnbull went to visit David Cameron, the very successful UK Tory leader. Cameron has been extremely successful in transforming the unelectable Tories to a forward looking, “progressive” conservative party. He has turned areas of traditional Tory weakness into strengths. Two examples showcase this: Cameron’s opposition to the British National Party and his framing of [...]

Social media and the vulnerability of "old politics"

The big difference between the current Liberal Party leadership tensions, and previous ones, is the role that social media such as Twitter and blogs, and “live updates” from SMS, are playing. Journalists in the Canberra press gallery are getting updates from Liberal MPs from inside party room meetings. The updates are “live” – that is, [...]

More double dissolution speculation

With the spectacular self-immolation of the Liberal Party this week (see the spill Twitter chatter here), speculation about a double dissolution on climate change is mounting. Last night, several political insiders expressed their belief that it was in Labor’s interests to go to a double dissolution when (if?) the Liberals delay the Carbon Pollution Reduction [...]

Communicate, don’t sell

An interesting article from our friends across the ditch, about how to use social networking tools. Don’t act like a salesperson. Interact with your potential members/customers/voters in order to build a relationship with them. Andrea Mitchell writes: Obama’s campaign sure got it right through social media. As Obama adviser Scott Goodstein said: “Some people only [...]

Mobile campaigning: using text messages

If you’re a follower of US politics, you’ll know that the Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, has won a resounding victory over his Democratic rival. While the campaign seems to have been run mainly on local issues (rather than national issues like health care), there is an interesting debrief taking place on [...]

The Glenn Beck story: the tail end

The Glenn Beck story: the tail end

A few weeks ago, I blogged about the Glenn Beck story, where an internet prankster satirised ultra-conservative US pundit Glenn Beck (a kind of super-Bolt). The prankster, Isaac Eiland-Hall, registered a website, which called on Beck to prove that he did not sexually assault and murder a young girl in 1990. The site was a [...]

Really amazing artist from South Africa

Really amazing artist from South Africa

Alex Latimer is an artist from South Africa who helped Mark Forrester (of Woothemes) redesign his website. Having looked over Latimer’s site and his portfolio, I am both amazed at this excellent and talented idiosyncratic and whimsical artist’s work. The below piece is one of my favourites. I thoroughly recommend you check him out.

My new toy

My new toy

Just arrived today: the Gigabyte t1028x. Pretty happy with it so far. The specs are better than I’d hoped for, and Windows 7 (Starter) is not too shabby. Just need to load up some final software, etc, before it’s ready to roll. Read a review about it here.
